DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintenance Strategy & Optimization
- Analyze maintenance practices and optimize (reactive vs planned vs predictive).
- Develop and implement maintenance improvement plans aligned with business goals.
- Optimize preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
- Reduce breakdowns and unplanned downtime through systematic improvements.
Reliability & Asset Performance
- Conduct root cause failure analysis (RCFA / RCA) on major and recurring failures.
- Identify chronic equipment issues.
- Improve MTBF and MTTR to improve equipment reliability.
- Support or implement Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) principles.
Maintenance Planning & Scheduling Improvement
- Improve quality of job plans, task lists, and maintenance standards.
- Standardize maintenance procedures and work instructions.
- Improve maintenance scheduling compliance and backlog management.
- Reduce emergency work through better planning discipline.
Cost Control & Efficiency
- Identify maintenance cost drivers and wastage.
- Improve spares usage and critical spares holding strategies.
- Support lifecycle cost optimization of equipment and
components.
Data Analysis & KPIs
- Analyze CMMS data to assist with identification of improvement opportunities.
- Track and report on maintenance KPIs such as availability, MTTR, MTBF and planned vs unplanned work ratio.
- Maintenance cost per operating hour and/or ton.
- Use data to drive fact-based improvement initiatives.
Continuous Improvement & Best Practice
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Benchmark maintenance performance against industry best practice.
- Identify and roll out improvement projects across Engineering sections.
Technical Support & Standards
- Support maintenance teams with technical problem-solving.
- Develop and maintain maintenance standards, task lists, and procedures.
- Ensure OEM recommendations are correctly interpreted and applied.
- Support modifications and equipment upgrades from a maintenance perspective.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure maintenance improvements align with legal and safety requirements (e.g. MHSA).
- Improve maintenance-related safety risks through design an process improvements.
- Support audits, risk assessments, and compliance activities.

- Change Management & Training
- Coach and mentor artisans, planners, and supervisors.
- Drive behavioral change towards proactive maintenance.
- Assist with training needs identification and competency improvements.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with: Operations, Engineering, Commercial, OEMs and Suppliers.
- Any other ad hoc duties and/or projects within the applicable area of responsibility and/or as delegated by Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
• Grade 12 and NQF level 6 engineering qualification
• Minimum 5 years relevant experience as Maintenance and Improvement Specialist within an opencast mining and process plant environment
• Must be Computer literate (Intermediate Microsoft Office Package).
• Experience in using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
• Qualified engineering artisan with valid trade certificate or equivalent will be added advantage
• System orientated (i.e. SAP, Ellipse, SAGE or KARABO PM) or similar experience.
• Project management certificate
• Supervisory certificate in engineering
• Valid driver’s license code 08
